CYCLING HIGHLIGHTS

FROM ARAGÓN TO VALENCIA

CYCLING HOLIDAY  CASTLES TERUEL - VIA VERDE - VALENCIA
Trek with hotels, Linear route from 289 to 253 km,bike level 2 to 3
6 of  7 days, Individual or Group tour

Cycle through the Middle Ages in Albarracín and Teruel, passing geological wonders and fascinating castles in the land of Aragon and Valencia. And taste the region; truffles, ham, olives and 'orxata'.

This is the most versatile cycling holiday, along all my favorite places!

It seems as if you see a castle (or ruin) on the horizon at every village in this region; Peracense, Albarracín, the Sierra de Espadán, Sagunto ...

This tour takes you past special buildings and fascinating landscapes. From the red, rugged sandstone fantasy rocks you travel via the railway cycle path 'Via Verde' and an intense green 'jungle' full of cork oaks to the clear blue Mediterranean sea, with its extensive orange groves. You stay in special places, like a truffle farm or a monastery.

A trip of 6 days with quite a few altimeters; ideal for sporty cyclists or electric connoisseurs!

Summary

Een cycle tour full of highlights, by scenic protected natural areas in the provinces of Badónc_3194-bbónc_Aragón (Aragón)

Start and end point is the city of Valencia, on the Mediterranean Sea. Marvel at the architecture, vast parks and rich decoration of this city, with a medieval centrum, 'modernist' market halls and futuristic buildings of Santiago Calatrava.

Inland it seems like every village

has its own castle (or ruin) on a cliff on the horizon. Peracense, Albarracín, the Sierra de Espadán, Sagunto... Here you will also find special bouwwerken and fascinating landscapes. From the red, rugged sandstone fantasy rocks around Albarracín and Teruel bicycle je via the Sierra de Espadán - an intense green 'jungle' full of cork oaks - to the clear blue Mediterranean sea, with its vast orange groves. You stay in special places, in an 'eco hotel', on a truffle farm, an old villa or a monastery.

A tour of 5, 7 or 9 days with quite a few altimeters; ideal for sporty cyclists or electric connoisseurs!

Itinerary

Below you will find the complete 9-day program. You can also choose the 6-day program. Then days 5, 6 and 7 from the program will expire.

Do you still want to cycle more or fewer days or have a day of rest somewhere in between?

We are happy to create a tailor-made program.

Day 1 (Monday or Tuesday)

Peracense-Albarracin (37 or 55 km)

Transfer from Valencia to Peracense, the starting point of the bike tour. You start at the fascinating castle, which blends seamlessly into the red sandstone environment. Via a vast plateau you slowly descend to the fortified town of Albarracín, with no less than 2 castles on the horizon. You can extend your route by following the river Guadalaviar, through a beautiful canyon.

You will stay in ***Hotel Albarracin or La Casa del tío Americano.

Day 2 (Tuesday or Wednesday)

Albarracin-Teruel (42 km)

After a short climb you cycle through the Pinares de Rodeno nature reserve, where you can literally look into the earth's crust. All kinds of rocks come to the surface here. The view over the vast plain of the Jiloca is fantastic, and you cycle through a forest full of huge red boulders in the most bizarre shapes. Then it goes downhill to Teruel.

At San Blas you can make an extra round to the reservoir. (In the summer you can canoe and paddle there). You spend the night in  Teruel, capital of the 'jamon' (smoked ham) and of course the Moorish architecture. You stay in Hotel Mudayyan, around the corner from the lively Plaza Torico square, with many nice bars and restaurants.

Day 3 (Wednesday or Thursday)

Teruel - Albentosa, 60 km

From Teruel you cycle to an old railway bridge. Here you merge onto Via Verde, a cycle path on an old mining railway. You climb slowly, through an area full of red clay hills, bordered by pine trees. Accompanied by the scent of wild rosemary and thyme you enjoy the landscape. Cycling through the mountains has never been so easy, because at the time the route was laid out as flat as possible for the train, with gradual differences in height.

From Puerto de Escandón you come to a plateau again. Black truffles grow under the orange soil, a delicacy from this region.

You will stay at one of our favorite accommodations: 'La Casa de la Estación'. This B&B is one kilometer from the spectacular Albentosa Viaduct, over a deep canyon; a nice area to have a look around. The owner of the B&B grows truffles around the house and likes to cook with it for his guests. (dinner is not included). Fancy some extra kilometers and altimeters? Then stay tonight in Manzanera or Mora de Rubielos, both historic towns about 10 km from the Via Verde.

Day 4 (Thursday or Friday)

Albentosa - Segorbe, 62 km

Today's stage crosses countless railway bridges and several long tunnels (up to 500m in length). You will also pass the 50 meter high viaduct at Albentosa. Spectacular! From Barracas you start a descent and you hardly have to pedal.

You will stay in **** hotel Spa Martin el Humano in Segorbe. In the evening you can enjoy a nice walk through the historic center and the park around the castle.

Day 5 (Friday or Saturday)

Segorbe - Sagunto-Canet, 53 km

Today the Mediterranean Sea comes into view. Through endless orange plantations you descend to sea level. In Sagunto you can visit the Roman castle and amphitheater. Then you follow a riverbed to the Canet d'en Berenguer, a quiet seaside resort with a beautiful sandy beach.

You will spend the night at ****Hotel Els Arenals, ****AGH or **Hotel Puerto Canet.

All comfortable hotels, close to the sea. There is a beautiful boulevard and a number of fine restaurants. You can also extend your stay here by one night.

Day 6 (Saturday or Sunday)

Canet - Valencia, 35/50 km

After breakfast you will cycle towards Valencia, via a long or short route.

The long route goes along the Marjal de Almenara, a wetland where it is sometimes teeming with waterfowl and flamingos.

Then you cycle via Sagunto through 'Valencia's vegetable garden', a horticultural area with small farms. At some farms you can taste 'Horchata', a typical drink whose main ingredient is grown on site. You then enter the city of Valencia via the boulevard and the beach.

You can continue cycling here via the riverbed of the Turia, nowadays a city park of 8 kilometers long.

A beautiful green lung through the city, where you will encounter futuristic buildings by architect Santiago Calatrava.

The cycling package ends in Valencia.

EXTENSION IN VALENCIA

You can extend your stay in Valencia.

We recommend ****hotel Silken Puerta Valencia. This hotel is within walking distance of the Turia River City Park and the futuristic buildings of Calatrava. The hotel has a secure parking garage, so you can use our bicycles for the rest of your stay.

In Valencia you can take a nice bike ride through the center, the Turia park and the futuristic City of Art and Science, accompanied by a Dutch guide.
