VIA VERDE OJOS NEGROS
Explore the former railway of Ojos Negros. This cycling tour starts and ends in Valencia City.
From there we take you to the mountainous interior of Teruel, and cycle in five stages back to Valencia. The route follows the former railway line from Ojos Negros to the Mediterranean Sea, over old bridges and through tunnels, a beautiful landscape of mountains, orchards and small villages.
The tour is self-guided, according to our directions (or optional GPS), guiding you from one hotel or B & B to the next.
And what if you want to buy a tipical spanish ham or ceramic bowl as a souvenir? No problem!
We provide daily luggage transfers to your next accommodation.
The difficulty of this tour is 2 (on a scale of 5). Since it's a former railway track, there are no abrupt ascents or descents. Great mayority of the track is flat or goes slightly downhill.
Our standard itinerary is 5 days, see details below. On request we can make the route shorter or longer, up to 8 days, adding a detour through nature reservea (Parque natural Sierra de Espadán o Pinares de Rodeno).
Day 1 Ojos Negros - Cella, 45 km (Monday)
In the morning we take you from Valencia to the start of the bike trail, the mining town of Ojos Negros, some 200 km inland.
You can look around in the village where the miners lived. Everything is still there: the church, the casino and the last train loaded with iron ore. Probably we can even have a look inside the mine.
Then it's time to start the ride. We provide your picnic for today.
You pass the town of Peracense with it's impressive castle, 'embedded' in a huge red sandstone formation.
The first day will end in Casa Agüelo (*), a beautifully restored farmhouse with an enclosed courtyard, in the village of Cella.
There are some restaurants nearby for Dinner (not included).
Alternatively, you can start this tour from the medieval town of Albarracín, crossing the nature reserve 'Pinares de Rodeno' and stay for the first night in Teruel. This route, however, is a bit more difficult.
Day 2: Cella - La Puebla Valverde, 60 km (Tuesday)
Today you cycle towards Teruel through the valley of the river Alfambra, where we start the ascent towards el puerto de Escandón.
This is the hardest part of the route, though it's not very steep. (For the train at the time the route laid out as flat as possible). The effort is compensated by the beautiful view!
In the plains of Valdecebro the landscape changes color. Red clay and pine trees alternate with the occasional hint of wild thyme and rosemary.
You cross the first tunnel before arriving at your next hotel in La Puebla Valverde, at the foot of the Sierra de Javalambre.
You stay in El Horno (*) or La Fonda de la Estación (***). Both hotels have their own restaurant for dinner (not included)
Day 3: La Puebla Valverde - Jerica, 70 km (Wednesday)
Today's route goes over countless bridges and through some long tunnels (up to 500 m) and the highest bridge (50 meters) over the river Albentosa. Spectacular! In terms of distance, this is the longest stage, but a large part is (gradually) downhill. Relatively easy cycling.
Upon arrival in Jerica your luggage is already waiting for you. You stay in the village at B&B/Casa Portalico or hotel Rosaleda Doncel (***). Or in the vintage Vila Pilar in Navajas, the next town.
Today's breakfast is included. For dinner, there are several options (at your own expense) in Jerica, an ancient village with Moorish influences.
Option: Extension of the route passing through Parque Natural Sierra de Espadán (surcharge).
At this stage, it's possible to add an extra cycling day. From the Via Verde you'll have to climb uphill, but the views are worth it.
You'll cross a part of the Sierra de Espadán. This nature reserve is famous for its red sandstone ravines and cork oak forests. You'll stay at the brand new eco-hotel 'Mar de Fulles'. Surrounded by virgin nature you stay in a hotel with a sustainable philosophy. The hotel operates 100% on solar energy, there's no tv (panoramic windows with mountain views instead) and a very nice restaurant where they mainly use local products, and herbs and vegetables from their own garden. There's an open air swimming pool (heated by the sun) and a space for yoga. Most guests stay here 1 or 2 days extra, just to relax and enjoy nature.
Day 4: Jerica - Sagunto - Canet, 55 km (Thursday)
Today we descend to the Mediterranean Sea, crossing plantations of oranges and olives. Then you reach Sagunto, with it's huge Roman castle and amphitheater.
Destination for today is Port of Sagunto, where once the trains left their load in the harbour.
You stay in the neighboring town of Canet, in hotel Els Arenals (****) or hotel AGH (****), close to the dunes and sandy beach. Breakfast is included. There is a boardwalk with restaurants for dinner (own expense).
Day 5: Canet - Valencia, 45 km (Friday)
After breakfast, you cycle towards Valencia on the 'Vía Xurra' by agricultural fields and small 'barracas' (typical farmhouses). At some of them (near Alboraya) you can stop to try a typical drink of the region: Horchata. The main ingredient is grown locally.
Then you cycle to your last hotel in Valencia.
In the city you can go to the historic city through the old riverbed of the Turia river. We can arrange for a city guide, which you explore the city. (25 euros per person)
The touring bikes are collected at the end of the day and then the cycle package ends.
We recommend to extend you stay at hotel Acteon (****). This hotel has a private parking for bicycles and is located close to the 'City of Arts and Sciences' and not too far away from the beach or the historical centre of Valencia.
By adding our route 'Land of Contrast' you can extend your cycling holidays another 8 days.
