From prehistory to the future

starting at Albarracín

Tour Summary

Explore the Sierra de Albarracín, follow the former railroad (Via Verde) of Ojos Negros and end at the futuristic City of Arts & Sciences in Valencia.

On the first day, we take you to the mountainous interior of Teruel and cycle in five stages back to Valencia. First stop is the medieval city of Albarracín and the neighbouring Natural Park with its prehistoric petroglyphs. Then head to the Moorish city of Teruel and the former railway line from Ojos Negros to the Mediterranean Sea, crossing old railway bridges and tunnels in a beautiful landscape of mountains, orchards and small villages.

The tour is self-guided, according to our directions (or optional GPS) from one to the other hotel or B & B.

We provide daily luggage transfers to your next accommodation.

The difficulty of this tour is 3 (on a scale of 5). There's an ascent of 200m on the very first track. From then it's mostly downhill. Once you're at the former railway track, there's no more abrupt ascents or descents.

By combining these routes with the bike tour  'Land of Contrasts' (the same difficulty level) or Sierra de Espadán you can make a bike tour up to 15 days.

Our standard itinerary is 5 days, see details below. On request you can extend your stay on a certain place or extend the route, for example adding a 'detour' through Parque natural Sierra de Espadán.

Day 1 Albarracín - Teruel, 45 km (Monday)

In the morning we take you from Valencia to Albarracín, the start point of the bike trail,  some 150 km inland.

You can look around in the medieval village before we climb to Pinares de Rodeno, a nature reserve with huge red sandstone rocks and prehistoric petroglyphs.

From there it's all the way down to the city of Teruel, your first stop for the night. Teruel is famous for it's 'jamon' and its moorish architecture. Our preferred places to stay are the modernist Hotel Mudayyan or Reina Cristina, around the corner of the vibrant Plaza Torico, the cities main square with many nice bars and restaurants.

Day 2: Teruel - Albentosa, 60 km (Tuesday)

From Teruel we head to the Via Verde, a former mining railroad that cuts through the mountains towards the Mediterranean Sea. First you have to climb towards el puerto de Escandón, one of the longest ascents of the route, although it's not very steep. (For the train at the time the route laid out as flat as possible). The effort is compensated by the beautiful view!

In the plains of Valdecebro the landscape changes colour. Red clay and pine trees alternate with the occasional hint of wild thyme and rosemary.

You cross the first tunnels before arriving at your B&B for tonight, 'La Casa de la Estación' near Albentosa. The owners love to cook with truffles, cultivated at their own farm.

Day 3: Albentosa - Jerica/Navajas, 60/70 km (Wednesday)

Today's route goes over countless bridges and through some long tunnels (up to 500 m) and the highest bridge (50 meters) over the river Albentosa. Spectacular! In terms of distance, this is the longest stage, but a large part is (gradually) downhill. Relatively easy cycling.

Upon arrival at your hotel in Jerica your luggage is already waiting for you. You stay in the village at Casa Portalico, hotel Rosaleda Doncel or Vila Pilar, a splendid B&B in a modernist villa in Navajas.

Today breakfast and picnic are included. For dinner there's several options in the village (at your own expense).

Option: Extension of the route passing through Parque Natural Sierra de Espadán (surcharge).

At this stage, it's possible to add an extra cycling day. From the Via Verde you'll have to climb uphill, but the views are worth it.

You'll cross a part of the Sierra de Espadán. This nature reserve is famous for its red sandstone ravines and cork oak forests.

You'll stay at the brand new eco-hotel 'Mar de Fulles'. Surrounded by virgin nature you stay in a hotel with a sustainable philosophy. The hotel operates 100% on solar energy, there's no tv (panoramic windows with mountain views instead) and a very nice restaurant where they mainly use local products, and herbs and vegetables from their own garden. There's an open air swimming pool (heated by the sun) and a space for yoga. Most guests stay here 1 or 2 days extra, just to relax and enjoy nature.

Day 4: Jerica/Navajas - Sagunto- Canet, 53 km (Thursday)

Today we descend to the Mediterranean Sea, crossing plantations of oranges and olives.

Destination for today is Canet, where

you stay in a hotel close to the dunes and the splendid beach. There is a boardwalk with restaurants for dinner (own expense). Breakfast is included.

Day 5: Canet - Valencia, 45 km (Friday)

After breakfast, you cycle towards Valencia on the 'Vía Xurra' by agricultural fields and small 'barracas' (typical farmhouses). At some of them (near Alboraya) you can stop to try a typical drink of the region: Horchata. The main ingredient is grown locally.

Then you cycle to your last hotel in Valencia.

In the city, you can go to the historic city through the old riverbed of the Turia river. We can arrange for a city guide, which you explore the city. (25 euros per person)

The touring bikes are collected at the end of the day and then the cycling package ends.
